Kiting in Puerto Rico is mostly on the north side of the island to take advantage of the clean NE trade winds that blow Dec-August. Though the wind seldom nukes, the bay at Dorado beach consistently pulls the wind 2-3 knots above what the meters show at San Juan, so 18-20 kt days in San Juan are low 20's at Dorado. Low gust differentials on most days mean you can hold your edge better in chop when setting up for jumps, and those who prefer jumping with their left foot back will enjoy the small to medium size kickers when there is swell in the inner reef at Dorado. Flat water riding can be found at river mouths around the island, but the downside is the questionable water quality of the rivers due to industrial and agricultural run-off. Ocean Park is a favorite urban spot with on-site kite schools, restaurants and lodging. Shacks is a famous break at Isabela and is definitely worth the drive from San Juan if wave riding is your stoke, but good surf breaks can be found throughout PR, sometimes right outside your front door. While the wind doesn't blow most days in the mid-20's and above, the trades are predictable and turn on around 11 a.m. most days during the winter, spring and summer. Other pros: as a U.S. territory, no passport is needed for U.S. citizens; great family friendly culture, most residents speak Spanish and English, wonderful island vibe.
